Camp Howard's Counselor In Training (CIT) encourages and promotes development in leadership and communication skills necessary for becoming a camp staff member. Open to teens 15 and 16 years old, our CIT program provides participants with tools and opportunities for growth and confidence at school, home, and at work.

Highlights of the Camp Howard CIT Experience:

  • Build confidence, leadership and communication skills.

The CIT program is a four (4) week program, in two parts, completed in order: CIT 1 and CIT 2. Although not required, we recommend each Part be a 2 week, back-to-back stay at Camp Howard. Typically, the program is spread over two summers (2 weeks per summer). CITs return home the weekend between sessions.

CIT 1 (Year 1)

CIT 1A (week 1) & CIT 1B (week 2). CITs learn how to transition from being a camper to a potential staff member within the camp setting. CIT 1s attend daily group meetings with the CIT Director to go over curriculum-specific training, focusing on leadership and communication skills, engage in group exercises, and explore camp staffing initiatives through Q & A sessions. In conjunction with this instructional component, CITs may be assigned to a cabin/unit to shadow Unit leadership staff. Shadowing has CITs experiencing camp from the staff perspective, key to the program.

CIT 2 (Year 2)

CIT 2A (week 1) & CIT 2B (week 2). CITs continue to transition from camper to potential staff member within the camp setting. CIT 2s continue to attend daily group meetings with the CIT Director to review and practice advanced curriculum-specific training. Similar to CIT 1 sessions, active shadowing of Unit leadership and specific instruction is given regarding duties and responsibilities of camp staff. In the final week, CIT 2s are given the opportunity to take a more active role in assisting with various camp programs. CIT 2 program is available to those who have completed CIT 1.

Summer 2025 Counselor in Training Dates

First year CIT participants sign up for CIT 1A and CIT 1B sessions.
Second year CIT participants sign up for CIT 2A and CIT 2B sessions.

Cost

$520 per CIT week.
CIT programs include all training, cabin stay and meals.

How to Apply:

1. Register and pay online (each session is a separate registration). $520/per week

2. Complete/submit the CIT Online Application. A CYO/Camp Howard staff member will then contact you.

3. Submit two reference using our Staff References Form. References examples are youth ministers, coaches, teachers, scout leaders, babysitting clients, or a neighbor. Please not have relatives or friends complete the form.
