ACA ACCREDITATION
ACA Accreditation shows that the camp considers camper safety to be a priority. So much so that they voluntarily undergo a peer review of their operation, wherein everything from staff qualifications and training to emergency management are reviewed. In conjunction with experts from organization/agencies, such as the American Red Cross and the American Academy of Pediatrics, they strive to create and maintain the most up-to-date, research-based standards in the camp industry.State Licensing vs. ACA AccreditationACA Accreditation is completely voluntary and based on standards that are both industry & nation-wide. It represents a camp’s commitment to its camper’s safety. State licensing is mandatory, where required, but requirements vary from state to state.ACA standards, in many cases, go beyond state and local requirements encompassing all aspects of camp, including but not limited to health & safety, healthcare, food service, staff training/certifications and staff to camper ratios. ACA Required Staff Screening & CertificationsAll camp staff are subject to annual criminal background checks, where permitted by law. At Camp Howard this includes being checked against the National Sex Offender Database.ACA applies separate and specific certification on standards for activities, such as waterfront, challenge courses and archery.Staff trained in First-Aid/CPR/AED and facilities are available whenever campers are present. In addition, Camp Howard employs a licensed, medical staff professional to be onsite when campers are present. Staff to Camper RatiosACA standards regarding staff to camper ratios are typically lower than those of schools and other youth activities.ACA staff to camper ratios generally range from 1:5 to 1:10, depending on age.Schools and other youth activities generally range from 10:1 to 29:1, depending on age. How can I verify that my child's camp is ACA accredited?Parents can (and should) verify the accreditation status of a camp by visiting ACA's website at www.ACAcamps.org
