COACH CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


Each year more than 10 million young people participate in interscholastic and club sport programs in the United States. The value these athletes ascribe to their experiences and the safety of their participation depends largely on the quality of the coaching they receive. 



Human Kinetics Coach Education Training (HKCE) - formerly known as A.S.E.P. (American Sports Education Program) Coaching Essentials

One time requirement / Online Only

 Nearly 50 years ago, CYO selected the American Sport Education Program’s (A.S.E.P.) Leader Level Sport-Coach courses as their coaching education program. CYO and A.S.E.P. help coaches at all levels provide safe, high quality sport experiences for their athletes. To learn more about ASEP and certify follow the the link below.

Background Check

Annual requirement with sport registration / online only

Background checks will be performed annually on all coaches (head, assistant), Team Aids, Sport Coordinators, and CYO Club Athletic Directors. When you register as a CYO Sport Coach the information will be submitted to run a background check. C.A.S.E Training (Creating A Safe Environment)

One time requirement / in-person only

CYO has partnered with the Archdiocese to help educate people on sexual abuse. In doing so, ALL coaches within CYO are required to be certified in the “Creating A Safe Environment” program. To learn more about CASE and certification follow the link below. As of July, 2019 C.A.S.E. Training has taken the place of Called to Protect Training. If you already have been certified in Called to Protect this is acceptable for CYO, otherwise you will need to take the updated C.A.S.E. Training. You will need to RSVP for your class which you can do on the C.A.S.E. page listed below.

Concussion Management Training

Annual requirement based on school year (expires June 15th) / online only


OREGON LAW: Oregon passed Senate Bill 348/”Max’s Law”, which requires coaches of school athletic teams to receive annual training on how to recognize symptoms of concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment for persons suspected of having a concussion.

WASHINGTON LAW: Washington State Law passed House Bill 1824/”Lystedt Law”, which affects anyone who participates in youth sports in the State of Washington, therefore CYO must implement this requirement for all CYO participants, parents and coaches in the state of Washington. To learn more about Concussion Management Training and certify follow the link below.
